Remanufacturing Challenge: Exploring New Ways to Extend Product Lifecycles

In 2024, the Remanufacturing Challenge was launched, inviting innovators to rethink how products can remain valuable for longer. The challenge focused on one central theme: prolonging the lifecycle of products through new technologies, business models, processes, and services.

The challenge was created against a backdrop of increasing demand for sustainable solutions across manufacturing industries. As businesses seek to reduce resource consumption and environmental impact, extending product lifecycles through repair, refurbishment, and remanufacturing has become an important opportunity. The Remanufacturing Challenge aimed to uncover ideas that could accelerate this transition and create value for both industry and society.

For Mirka, the topic is closely connected to its expertise in surface finishing. Almost every product undergoes surface treatment at some point in its lifecycle, whether during manufacturing, maintenance, refurbishment, or remanufacturing. By supporting innovations that enable products to be repaired, restored, and reused, it becomes possible to reduce waste while creating new business opportunities.

The challenge brought together entrepreneurs, startups, researchers, and innovators with a shared interest in building a more circular future. Through M.INC, participants received guidance and feedback throughout the challenge, helping them strengthen both their solutions and their business concepts. The winners received a prize of EUR 10,000 and the first runner-up EUR 5,000. The winner was AI Electronix, developed by Jacob Pesämaa and Sagar Yadav. Their AI-powered application for electronics troubleshooting impressed the jury by enhancing repairability and remanufacturing while making complex diagnostics more accessible. In addition, the winners were given the opportunity to continue developing their ideas through M.INC.

More than a competition, the Remanufacturing Challenge demonstrated how collaboration between industry and innovators can contribute to a more sustainable future. By focusing on extending product lifecycles, the challenge showed how innovation can transform sustainability ambitions into practical solutions.
